Trees for Elham (phase 1)

Trees for Elham is a tree planting project run in co-operation with the Elham Gardening Society.
In phase 1, (March 2009), we planted 75 trees at fourteen sites around the Elham Parish.

The charity Kent Men of the Trees kindly provided over 100 trees and some hedgerows.  The sites were prepared in February 2009 and planting completed at the end of March.  The project was celebrated at our second Eco Fair held in the School Hall and the final 15 trees planted in the school grounds.

Great care was taken in selecting the locations and species. At the Cricket Ground there 12 Field Maples were planted along the approach drive, with two Tall Maples, five Walnut trees and some Birch, Hornbeams and Whitebeams in the actual ground. Other sites included Canterbury Road, Large Leaved Red Oak and North of Bereforstal Farm, 6 Wych Elms and 6 Walnut trees. The churchyard, was planted with a Dark Purple and White Lilac.  All trees were staked and those in fields containing livestock were fitted with cattle guards.

To help fund the project, the Gardening Society donated £300 and Kent County Councillor Susan Carey committed £500 towards the cattle guards.
